I was reading the local newspaper this morning, and there was an article about the Danes being rated the happiest people on Earth. So this reporter went to Copenhagen to ask people what they thought contributed to this happiness. What struck me as a very interesting comment by one Dane was that she replied with something similar to this, “Because Denmark is made for the middle class, not the upper class.” And wow, isn’t that a concept. For a country to dedicate itself to making sure that the majority, the middle, is happy. Not to create some thick, unattainably high wall, and say, “Okay, all of you who can climb this wall and get to the other side, you can be happy and have everything that you want. Anyone who can’t, tough luck. Here’s a toy, so just go home, play with it, and pray that you will be able to climb this enormous wall someday.” (Oh, and by the way, did I mention that most of the happy few were born on the “right” side of the wall?) Such a simple comment, yet I think that that is the key to a successful government - one that looks out for the rights and happiness of the majority of its citizens, its middle class, the soul of the country, not just the ones who have all of the money, the "top" 5%. Why can't we understand this? And moreover, why can't the American middle class REALIZE that we are being cheated, that we are being lied to? That our government no longer represents us? Does not care about us? Is NOT looking out for our best interest? Maybe the answer lies in this: I was listening to the radio this afternoon, and the news briefly came on. The lady first made a brief statement about the presidential campaign. Directly after, she announced another big piece of news, "And the number one box office hit this last weekend 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua' grossed $29 million" - ??!! I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone!
